Mafia Wars ad on Facebook banned in the UK
Zynga have gotten themselves in trouble again, this time over an advertisement for Mafia Wars running on Facebook's ad platform. The ad was banned by the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) which is a self-regulating organization in the United Kingdom that acts as a watchdog over advertising across all forms of media.
The controversial ad (shown to the right) depicted a young adult male in a gray hooded sweatshirt holding a knife up in a threatening manner. Below the image was the following text: "Earn your street cred and be respected. Advance from gangster to head boss in Mafia Wars. Play now." The ASA are claiming that this ad's message is saying that carrying a weapon is the way to earn respect and be successful.
Zynga have passed the blame onto Facebook, stating that the ad did have to go through Facebook's approval process. They are also claiming that the ad was targeted at adults who should be capable of understanding the context of the ad.
While Facebook haven't acknowledged the social impact of the threatening message, the ad was removed due to violating their policy that prevents ads from displaying pictures of weapons.

PetVille Treasure Trinkets: Just how rare are they?
PetVille treasure trinkets
Over the weekend, PetVille players were greeted with a new message telling them about new prizes that can be found when you visit your friend's houses. These "super rare" Treasure Trinkets are either a Crown, Mushroom, or Diamond in a variety of colors. When you find one of these items, they act as trash which means that clicking them will automatically give you the reward. I'm a little disappointed that I can't keep the items if I find them and have the choice to sell them, but finding a 10,000 coin reward might take the sting off a bit. You can also find these items when you use Clean Bombs.
So far, these seem to be very rare as expected. I cleaned approximately 60 different PetVille houses tonight and didn't see a single rare item. I'm sure it will take some time to discover one. Players are posting in the official announcement thread that they have found these items. Supposedly, the diamond will give you 500 coins, and the crown will give you 1000 coins. Could it be the mushroom that gives you 10,000 coins, or are these random in their coin reward amount?
Have you found one of the new Treasure Trinkets? Which one, and how many coins did you get for it?

Facebook broadening Credits giveaways for gamers
While some developers and users are still somewhat ambivalent about Facebook's new unified Credits currency, we're pretty sure no one is ambivalent about free stuff. So we're pretty sure that no social gamer can be unhappy that Facebook is widening its credit giveaway program in many popular social games.
Inside Facebook readers have reported seeing ads for anywhere from 10 to 25 free Facebook Credits (worth $1 to $2.50) popping up alongside "many Facebook games" in the past week. Of course this isn't the first time Facebook has given away credits to gamers, but the expanded breadth of these giveaways seems to show Facebook is making a big push to get gamers invested in their new currency. And it's easy to see why: Facebook reportedly gets 30 cents on the dollar for every Facebook Credit spent.
So what do you think? Is a couple of dollars enough to get you to jump on board with this new payment system? Maybe you're already on board and just happy to get a few more Credits for no good reason? Or perhaps you going to hold out with your credit card payments to the bitter end, in some form of misguided solidarity with developer independence. In any case

Rummikub: Another classic board game gets the Facebook treatment
Scrabble has been out on Facebook for, well, what seems like forever and now another classic board game is getting the social gaming treatment. The game Rummikub (pronounced 'Rummy-cube') has made the jump to Facebook, bringing along with it the same tile-swapping madness with a few socialized elements like video chat and the ability to send animated virtual gifts to fellow players. rummikub on facebook
If the first thought after reading this is "Rummy-wha?" here's a general idea on how the game works. Each player gets a handful of tiles (each with colored numbers on them) and the goal is to be the person to get rid of them first by laying them down on the board in either numerical order or in sets of the same numbers. You can also swap tiles that have already been played to make new sets later in the game. For more details on the Rummikub rules, go here. It's actually a lot like Scrabble, but instead of making words on a board, you're creating sets of numbers.
rummikub virtual gifts
I gave the game a short test drive, and as a Rummikub virgin, it was a little difficult to get into the swing of things without being able to play against a computer opponent first. It looks like that will be an option at some point (there's a Play With Robots button in the main menu that's not active yet), but I was impressed how quickly you are matched with fellow players, and it was easy to send everyone at your table virtual gifts (a toast, good luck wishes, a kiss, if you're feeling sassy) in between turns.
rummikub on facebook
The game allows you to start and customize your own room and those customization options will be extended at an unspecified point in the future. Rummikub.com also offers an almost identical version of this game, so if you've played the game there, the Facebook version will be instantly familiar. You'll start the game out with a certain number of coins, called Joker Credits, which can be used to send certain gifts or buy a new background for the room you're playing in, and when you run out, you can purchase more using real-life cash. It's not clear if you can earn more Joker Credits by winning a game (I haven't won one yet!), so stay tuned.

So, if you like Rummikub in real-life but don't have anyone to play it with or just want to try a game that doesn't involve planting and plowing crops on Facebook, give this classic game a whirl. But, I that recommendation comes with a warning. Before you play, make sure you can spare 15 minutes or so playing the game. Unlike FarmVille, you're pitted against live opponents, and quitting the game will spoil the tile-swapping fun for everyone.

FrontierVille storage shed coming soon to a homestead near you
Already got too much stuff cluttering your newly settled homestead? You'll soon be able to alleviate that with a new storage shed, that -- as implied in this teaser graphic -- you'll have to collect (or buy) materials to build.
Funny, looks like FrontierVille is taking lots of notes from FarmVille -- there's a buildable chicken coop, now storage -- how soon until we can harvest more crops at once using a team of high-powered mules?
Stay tuned for more details as soon as we got 'em.

Zynga's Snoop Dogg Mafia Wars stunt almost gets whacked
The massively hyped Mafia Wars stunt in which Zynga hired Snoop Dogg to blow up an armored truck during a live webcast nearly ended up sleeping with the fishes. A particularly notable outcome, as the event took place in the middle of the Nevada desert.
To be fair, live broadcasts are always unpredictable, and what happened here should be a cautionary tale to all. The Zynga webcast started out with a few audio problems in the run-up to the big finale, but once Snoop Dogg showed up, shortly after 9:00pm ET, things seemed like they were going to go smoothly.
The rapper and a Zynga rep stood side by side, staring out at the distant armored truck, when a pyrotechnic expert handed Snoop the trigger device for the explosive-packed vehicle. As the countdown began, everything seemed to shift into slow motion.
The main camera focused on the truck, with Snoop standing off to the side. It sounded like a second camera was set up nearby, as -- just before setting off the explosion -- an off-screen voice told Snoop to move over, as he was bl

Zynga Texas Poker: Zynga doubles down in China with new poker game
Zynga launched a localized version of its popular Zynga Poker in Hong Kong and Taiwan this week. This new version of the game, called Zynga Texas Poker, is available on Facebook, and while the social network is still banned in most of mainland China, CEO Mark Pincus says this game will give Zynga more access to a huge social gaming audience.
"We are excited to bring poker to Hong Kong and Taiwan and connect local players to the nearly 30 million people around the world who are already active on Zynga Poker," says Pincus.
And how do they expect to do that? By enticing new players with free chips and cold hard cash. Each newbie from Taiwan and Hong Kong will be welcomed with 8,888 free poker chips and the chance to win $880,000 Taiwanese dollars. Eight is a lucky number in Chinese culture, so this is a clear attempt to resonate with a new audience beyond translation.
This new poker game, in addition to Zynga's purchase of Beijing-based XPD Media and recent entry into Japan with help of Softbank, shows that the social gaming giant is serious about finding new players in other parts of the world.
Why should you care? Well, while Zynga is reaching out internationally, that also opens the possibility that we'll see more international social games make their way to us. That might grant us access to a new breed of games, as in name brands that we've been playing on other plaftorms for years. Yup, we're talking to you Square Enix -- you know you're itching to release Final Fantasy on Facebook. If you do that, we're willing to bet that the odds are stacked in your favor.

Facebook brings Lolapps back online since recent privacy breach
Lolapps, creator of recent hits such as Critter Island and Champions Online for Facebook, is finally back online on Facebook after being shut down by the social network Friday, Oct. 18, according to Information Week. The company reportedly provided its players' information to independent advertising data firms, which goes against Facebook policy.
In a blog post made Saturday, Mike Vernal of the Facebook Engineering Team said, "We take strong measures to enforce this policy, including suspending and disabling applications that violate it." However, what Facebook is doing to fix the issue within other companies such as the infamous Zynga much less reprimand them has yet to be seen.
Lolapps CEO Arjun Sethi claimed in a blog post that the issue was due to how web browsers work and was not intentional. However, he did issue a formal apology that said, "Since Lolapps was founded in 2008, we have always been committed to Facebook's platform policies and will continue to be as we grow. The entire team here wants our 150 million users to know that we are sorry they had to go without their favorite Lolapps games and applications." An official response by Zynga in light of the investigation hasn't yet been made, but sit tight.

American Idol creator buys The Price is Right developer, Facebook game show wars ensue
The Price is Right
FremantleMedia, a British media company behind hit reality TV series like American Idol and X Factor, has taken 80 percent ownership of Ludia, Digital Spy reported. The Canadian studio behind the recent Facebook hit The Price is Right, Ludia is another vital step to FremantleMedia's plans to "broaden and diversify" into other entertainment platforms than TV.
Ludia isn't new to FremantleMedia, however; the studio has made several Wii, PC and mobile games using the company's properties like Family Feud and, of course, The Price is Right. Apparently, the buyout won't change much as Ludia president Alex Thabet will still be running the show, according to FremantleMedia.
What's most important, however, is how Game Show Network (GSN) might respond to Ludia's new found wealth and resources. With two big time TV networks now officially in the social games industry, some serious competition is about to heat up. If the current match up seems to be The Price is Right vs. Wheel of Fortune, what could come next? American Idol vs. Deal or No Deal? Only if we can do the judging.

FarmVille Bee Rabbit, Palm Monster, Pirate Goat & Phoenix are a motley crew
farmville palm monster farmville pirate goat farmville phoenix
Okay so these four unreleased FarmVille animals aren't really on an action squad together. Nor are they fighting crime with their super powers, but just imagine if they were! Oh man, I've never seen a group of four with more butt-kicking potential.
Pirate Goat would totally be the leader, thinking up complex plans, but also capable on the battlefield. Bee Rabbit would be the quick, sneaky, kung-fu master who does as he is told. Palm Monster is the big guns. He brings heavy duty firepower in addition to witty humor the other team members aren't crazy about. Finally, the Phoenix is the noble fourth. He has an English accent and is very stubborn.
Well that's how I see them anyways, fighting crime in a loyal team of four. These guys are unreleased as of right now, but we'll be sure to let you know when they hit the FarmVille market. Continue reading to see them in action.

Cupcake Corner releases new autumn and cozy country decor
Cupcake Corner has updated with a whole host of new items over the past week or so. At the moment, we're getting slammed with decorations from two separate but related themes - Cozy Country and Autumn. All of these items combined make for a very comfortable bakery for you to make your cupcakes in, that's for sure! Here is a glimpse into the new items.
The Weathered Green set includes tables and chairs with a country comfort sort of feel to them. You can also get yourself a stuffed bear (not the teddy bear kind, but the taxidermist kind) or a crackling country hearth. Of course, there is also a register and a counter for you to purchase to fit the cozy theme.
For the fall season, there is a cute leaf pile and a set of colorful pumpkins. There is also a set of gourds, which scream autumn harvest season to us, and a set of pine barrels. For the bakers, there is an Autumnal Bliss Cupcake (shown to the right) and a delicious Pecan Pie.
We're really enjoying the fall and Thanksgiving decor in our favorite Facebook games this season. There is so much creativity in all of these games, and we can't wait to see what Thanksgiving brings us next!

Sorority Life: New catwalks allow daily outfit competitions
Sorority Life catwalks
Sorority Life has updated their catwalks feature to add an entire new dimension to the game -- costume contests! Seemingly inspired by Crowdstar's It Girl, this new feature allows you to submit an outfit for a theme each day in order for players to vote for the winner. You can also view all of today's submissions and vote on your favorites, or submit theme ideas. All theme ideas come from player submissions, so this is a chance for you to be creative and have fun with the avatars in Sorority Life.
To access this feature, open up the Catwalks tab like normal and then click on the Costume Contest subtab. There you'll see the option to either vote on today's submissions or enter the contest for the next day. You can see what theme the contest requires you to dress up as, and then deck your avatar out in your best clothes in an attempt to be the best looking avatar who most accurately represents the theme in style.
If you'd rather vote on your favorites, you can go through matches of threes and pick the best outfits. Once you vote, you can see who is winning so you can see how you matchup with other people's opinions. You can also ask your friends for votes, which adds to the social aspect of the game.
Finally, if you have a brilliant idea for a costume theme you can submit it in the available box and they will choose your theme if they like it. Pretty neat!

Mall World refreshes gift list with six new decor items
Metrogames does a fantastic job of keeping their gift selection fresh and updated so that there is always something new to send to friends. Today, Mall World has updated with six brand new gifts that you can give and receive.
The most elaborate is the Cypress Fountain, which is a large fountain surrounded by water and trees. Second, there is a new Pool Deck perfect for lounging in the sun with a margarita in your hand. The Iron Street Clock is a classy way for your customers to tell time while on the go, and the Rising Sun Signage will lead them to where they need to go. The Vase Fountain is a really unique multilevel decorative fountain, which will look awesome if it is animated. Lastly, the Brown and White Pot is a new addition which is the most plain and boring but will add a bit of green foliage to your mall.
The game has also done a bit of revamping to the way you help customers. Previously, a customer would think about a store or a decoration in a thought bubble and you could click on them to help them out. Now, you need to actually drag them onto the building or decor item that they're thinking about. Sounds easy, right? Well, not if your mall has grown to a size where you can't remember what kind of buildings you put where. It does make it quite a bit more challenging to help out your customers who find themselves wanting something specific.

Island Paradise Animal Booster Totem allows you to hoard more animals
Unlike most games on Facebook that encourage mass animal collection, Island Paradise actually limits you on how many harvestable animals you can have on your tropical island at any time. This can be rather limiting, because friends are constantly posting sad and adorable animals on their wall and I get frustrated when I can't save them all and put them on my island.
The new Animal Booster Totem allows you to increase the number of animals you can have by 2. The basic storage barn allows you to have 14 animals, and each time you increase your storage barn's capacity by collecting materials from your friends you get to have two more animals. The Animal Booster Totem costs 650 Meteor Credits and is only available for 10 days, and you can find it in the Decorative section of the store.
How many animals do you have on your island? Leave a comment and let us know!

NBC's National Dog Show prances to Facebook with Dog Show Friends
Dog Show Friends
Still reeling from biggest pooch parade of the year? NBC and the National Dog Show want you to relive your fond, fur-filled memories in their new Facebook game, Dog Show Friends. Designed by NBC Sports and 4mm Games, Dog Show Friends allows players to adopt a puppy, nurture and train for dog shows in competition with their friends. The game is also sponsored by Purina Dog Food, which is made crystal clear throughout, and hosted by an eerily accurate rendition of John O'Hurley.
According to Kevin Monaghan, SVP and Managing Director of NBC Sports Digital Media, "The game will allow our community of viewers to continue the National Dog Show experience long after 'Best in Show' has been awarded." Actor John O'Hurley adds, "Social gaming is fast becoming an important part of our lives and the entertaining world of show dogs – virtual or not – is a perfect fit."
Find out more about your next social pet adventure behind the break.
Gameplay
Much like other pet care games, you'll have to feed, bathe and give your pet some love. In this case, these routines have been boiled down to stats that your dog must maintain to do its best in the shows--all you need to do is keep the number above each given statistic in the green. Though, things get both a bit more and less involved than that. (Trust us, you'll see in a minute.)
In order to perform at local shows, your dog will need to learn tricks. Think of these as missions or goals in other games, consuming your dog's Energy while leveling up his abilities. Dogs can learn a long list of tricks including Sit, Down, Heel and more. However, there are a few hitches with the game considering it's brand new.
Trick Level Up!
First of all, you currently cannot buy more Bones or Golden Bones to buy Purina Food to keep your pet healthy. In fact, several features have yet to be added to the game like decoration items, ribbons and trophies. However, Ribbons and Trophies could very well be in the game, but I cannot progress any further due to being dirt broke from feeding this pet relentlessly. Seriously, these guys loose Energy as if they're on the show floor already. And since you're only given about 500 Bones with your pet requiring Purina Food (which costs 50 Bones per feeding) nearly every minute, it will only be a matter of time before you run out.
While leveling up and mastering tricks provides Bones, it wasn't enough to sustain this little guy's hunger. This left me nearly helpless until the game crashed, leaving a random three bags of Purina Food in my Gift Box upon reloading. As for Energy to learn tricks with, it operates almost exactly the same way it does in other popular social games. You can buy Energy instantly for a price in real dollars or you can put your puppy to sleep (no, not that sleep!) to restore Energy slowly. And, of course, paid items are available through Golden Bones, which aren't actually available for purchase yet.
Dog Show Level Up
Other features promised include multiple dogs, breed contests and more items. But for now just enjoy watching your little one sleep, eat and play as Mr. O'Hurley guides you on your quest for the ultimate show dog.

ESPNU College Town: Play Lacrosse in District 4 thanks to update
Optometrist, Music Shop and more
Well, not literally, but you get the point. Playdom has finally unlocked District 4 for expansion in a recent update to ESPNU College Town. Players now have even more room to put all their stuff and, more importantly, fit more venues thanks to the new space. Also included in the update was Lacrosse, a new Soccer venue event that will operate much like other sports events, but again without new All Stars.
New Entertainment buildings added to the game include the Optometrist, Music Shop, Cemetery and Campground--all of which either grant coins per hour or School Spirit. The first two both cost 8 Campus Cash while the last two both go for 10 Campus Cash, which amounts to $2 and $2.50, respectively. However, the next two changes we're about to mention might be more exciting than any new content. First, Playdom has finally added the ability to move and remove roads easily. Now, all you need to do is click on the road to either move it somewhere else or remove it entirely.
Second is the Save State option. Located underneath the screen shot icon, this allows you to save then game after queuing a long list of actions like collecting from properties or adding more students. What this does is force the game to sync with Playdom's servers immediately, ensuring that none of your recent actions are undone in an unfortunate crash. This isn't a complete fix, but hey, at least this gives us an option other than, say, throwing our laptops out the window.

Happy Pets Cyber Monday Sale: Penguins are new and 30 percent off
The words "Cyber Monday" and "Penguin" probably have never been uttered in the same sentence until now. Kudos to CrowdStar for making history in Happy Pets, sort of. For the next few hours as of this writing, the brand new Penguin pets are 30 percent off in honor of the recluses' Black Friday. Each Penguin matures in just three days and need to be fed every eight hours, so don't mess this up. And could you with eyes like that? Here are all six Penguin varieties:
Tuxedo Penguin: 44 Facebook Credits ($4.40)
Grey Penguin: 40 Facebook Credits ($4)
Brown Penguin: 40 Facebook Credits ($4)
Orange Penguin: 40 Facebook Credits ($4)
White Penguin: 42 Facebook Credits ($4.20)
Yellow Penguin: 40 Facebook Credits ($4)
After the three hours are up at 4 p.m. PST, these cute flightless birds will jump right back up to full price. So, if you want your hands on one of these, you better act quick before having to pay over $6 for some of these faux birds. While these Penguins don't seem to do much other than look adorable, at least they don't sound like Robin Williams or perform choreographed dance routines. That would just be annoying.

Treasure Isle's Design a Holiday Item Contest chills the creative juices
With yet another holiday upon us (Seriously, where do these things come from?), Zynga has decided that it wants its loyal players of Treasure Isle to design the ultimate Holiday item in another plainly titled event, the Design a Holiday Item Contest. Running today through Dec. 7 at midnight, players can submit up to three images of their item design to the contest's official forum thread.
What's even better is that Zynga will accept nearly any type of design whether it be digital, drawn in ink or whatever you fancy creative types come up with. The top three designs, chosen by the Treasure Isle Team, will be digitized and added to the Market in-game. As for the winning designers, you'll win once of each item design and a hefty 100 Island Cash. If you think you can flex your creative muscle as hard as the folks who get paid to do it, then give it a shot this holiday. All you have to lose is practice time, which we all could afford to lose more of.
